Pom’s make excellent watchdogs as long as they are trained to stop barking on command.  As with all breeds, it is important to socialize your Pomeranian to a variety of people, places and other animals. A well socialized pup will grow into a well-adjusted dog who is good with other animals and friendly with strangers. Lifespan: 12-18

Does well in an apartment: 4

Shedding: hypoallergenic/low-non shedding

Intelligence: 5

Kid Friendly: 5

Dog Friendly: 4

Tolerates being alone: 1

Ease of Training: 4

Suitable for: Mini Bernadoodles are highly intelligent, affectionate pups who love to play and thrive on human interaction. They need a home with people who are mostly-present, as they do best with near constant companionship. This is a great little family dog, as they love both children and other pets. ( As always, it is important to never leave a toddler or preschooler alone with your puppy, less one of them accidentally hurts the other.) Despite their small size, these pups have a lot of energy and will definitely need at least forty minutes of walking per day, along with lots of indoor playtime and mental stimulation. It is important to know that a lack of exercise will lead to anxiety and potential destructive behavior in this breed. The Mini Bernadoodle requires daily brushing to keep their coat from matting and will need to be groomed every eight to ten weeks or so, depending on how fast their fur grows. If you are looking for an extremely loyal, affectionate, intelligent pup who loves to play and will stay by your side no matter what, the Mini Bernadoodle may be the perfect pup for you!

LHASA APSO

Weight:  12-14

Energy level: 3

Exercise Needs: 3

Lifespan: 14-16

Does well in an Apartment: 3

Shedding: hypoallergenic

Intelligence: 4

Kid Friendly: 3.5 (elementary-school aged and up)

Dog Friendly: 3

Tolerates being alone: 2

Ease of Training: 3.5

The Lhasa Apso was originally bred to be a palace guard dog and he takes his duties very seriously—both with his obvious pride in his royal lineage and in a strong protectiveness towards his family.  If you are comfortable with a little watchdog who will alert you to any danger, (even if the “danger” is your Amazon Delivery) the Lhasa is a great choice. However, if you live in somewhere barking might disturb your neighbors, this might not be the breed for you.  Don’t get me wrong. Lhasa’s can be trained to bark less, but you will never succeed in fully training them out of the need to bark. But, again, with the bark comes a fierce loyalty and desire to protect their family. This devoted little pup does require a lot of socializing, to combat their natural wariness. However, as they are small and hypoallergenic, they are easy to bring everywhere with you!

These smart little dogs have an independent streak and will respond best to a firm but gentle hand, consistent training and an owner who will love them and spend lots of time with them without babying them. These are intelligent, self-possessed pups who are happy to do their own thing while still being devoted to their owners. Although lively and playful throughout their puppyhood (which generally lasts till around the age of three) overall, this pups exercise needs are moderate. They are quite happy to sit on the couch with you and will be fine with a couple short walks a day and some toys of their own. They do great with children who are a little older and out of their clumsy “step-on-the-dog” phase. So, basically, elementary-school aged kids who have been taught how to behave with dogs.  If you are looking for a super smart, long-lived, hardy little dog to be your most loyal companion, look no further than the Lhasa Apso!

MINI SHEEPADOODLE

2nd Gen

Weight:  10-20

Exercise Needs: 4

Lifespan: 12-15

Does well in an Apartment: 5

Shedding: Non-Shedding

Intelligence: 5

Kid Friendly: 5

Dog Friendly: 5

Tolerates being alone: 1

Ease of Training: 3.5

Suitable For: Sheepadoodles mix the best of both worlds: a Sheepdog’s gentle protectiveness and a Poodle’s intelligence and playful energy. These big, fluffy pups adore being around their families, as they’re loyal, affectionate, and thrive on attention. As they are intensely attached to their people, if left alone too often or for long lengths of time, they will likely develop separation anxiety and other bad habits. This is definitely a breed that needs to be a vital member of your family! While they’ll happily adapt to apartments or houses, these pups need daily walks or playtime to burn off their energy. Due to their intelligence, they also need a good bit of mental stimulation, so things like puzzle toys, snuffle mats and speech buttons are all great ideas for this breed.

Sheepadoodles are quick learners (thanks to their Poodle genes) and pick up tricks easily, but they can also be a bit stubborn when their Sheepdog side kicks in. Short training sessions with a lot of positive reinforcement are the way to go. These pups are great with kids and other pets, but—like any breed—they do best with early socialization to people, places and other animals. They are good for novice owners, provided their new person understands that they may sometimes dig in their heels. Obedience training is a great idea for both the first time owner and their puppy! These pups look like adorable stuffed-animals, but keep in mind that their fur will need daily brushing, in order to keep in from becoming tangled, and they will need to be groomed approximately every six weeks. With their comical antics and abundant, endless love for their humans, the Sheepadoodle is perfect for families who want a loyal, lovable buddy who has an active sense of humor!

STANDARD POODLE

Weight: 40-60

Lifespan: 12-15

Does well in an apartment: 5

Shedding: hypoallergenic/non-shedding

Intelligence: 5

Kid Friendly: 5

Dog Friendly: 4

Tolerates being alone: 1

Ease of Training: 5

Suitable for: Poodles are highly intelligent dogs, eminently trainable and great at almost whatever task you can give them. It is important that you give them jobs, as they are so smart that they can become bored and destructive if they don’t receive enough mental/physical stimulation. Training your dog and teaching good doggie manners shows them that you are in charge, and allows them to be happy and relaxed.

Because of their inquisitive nature and love of learning, obedience training is an excellent idea for your Poodle. Again, this is a smart, curious breed that does not do well with boredom or too much time spent alone. If your Poodle is left alone for hours a day, they will become destructive and neurotic. This is a dog that needs to be part of the family! Poodles are great with kids. They will do fine with toddlers/preschool aged children, as long as the child is supervised and has been taught how to behave around dogs. They also get along well with other pets, especially when introduced in puppyhood. Like any breed, they should be well-socialized to a variety of people, places and other animals to ensure they are happy and well-adjusted. The Poodle is great for a novice dog owner, a family or pretty much anyone who is looking for a highly intelligent, energetic, loyal pup who would follow them to the ends of the earth!

Suitable for: The West Highland Terrier, or “Westie” is a classic case of a “big dog in a little dog’s body.” They are not pushy or moody—just clever. This little pup will happily do whatever you want, as long as you can convince them it’s worth their while. Haha. Like all working breeds, this pup has a lot of energy to expend. However, instead of hunting, nowadays their energy is usually channeled into agility and obedience competitions. The Westie can also make a great therapy dog. Above all that, the Westie makes a wonderful companion, as they absolutely adore people and get along great virtually everyone, including kids and other pets. I will mention that this breed likes to bark and is often quite noisy. However, they are also quick learners. Using short, enjoyable training sessions that include lots of praise and treats, your Westie can absolutely be trained to alert you with just one short bark. So, if you are looking for an active pup who is intelligent and independent but also cheerful and affectionate—a pup who will fill your home with love and laughter, come meet our Westie today!

Does well in an apartment: 1

Shedding: hypoallergenic/low-shedding

Intelligence: 5

Kid Friendly: 4

Tolerates being alone: 2

Ease of Training: 5

Suitable for: Families or owners with an active lifestyle who plan to bring the dog along to most activities. Novice owners are suitable for this breed, but only if they are willing to do obedience training. An Aussiedoodle is a hybrid dog, who is half Australian Shepherd and half Poodle. These pups have inherited the best characteristics of both parents and are extremely intelligent, fiercely loyal dogs who love to play. Striking in appearance and naturally outgoing, these pups make excellent family dogs, as long as they are given lots of positive reinforcement training and plenty of exercise, both mental and physical. Aussiedoodles also make excellent therapy or service dogs, because of their love for people and their need for a sense of purpose.

On the flip side of that, if they are left alone for long periods of time, especially with nothing to do, with the Aussiedoodle will likely become destructive and develop intense separation anxiety, so they must go home with an active, engaged owner or family. Aussiedoodles will bark when necessary but are not loud dogs. Having been bred for intelligence, trainability and companionship, they make sensible watchdogs who will alert you to danger.  If you are looking for a goofball, extremely lovable dog whose brains who will give you a run for your money and whose heart will be forever yours, the playful, eager-to-please Aussiedoodle may just be the pup for you!

YORKSHIRE TERRIER

Weight: 4-8

Energy level:  5

Exercise Needs:  3

Lifespan:  12-15 years

Does well in an Apartment:  5

Shedding: hypoallergenic/low-non shedding

Intelligence:  3.5

Kid Friendly:  3 (not recommended for toddlers/preschoolers)

Dog Friendly:  3

Tolerates being alone:  2

Ease of Training: 3.5

Suitable for:  The Yorkie is the definition of a big dog in a little dog body—spunky and fearless, this pup is always up for a good time or a grand adventure. These little dogs do great in apartments, but are definitely yappy, so you will have to train them to know when and when not to bark. Because of their size and temperment, Yorkies are definitely recommended for families with older children who have been taught how to treat dogs—this is not a breed that will tolerate a lot of poking and prodding from small children. These pups are energetic and love to take walks and have play sessions, but are small enough that their exercise needs can be easily met with a ten to fifteen minute walk a day and some inside playtime. The Yorkie is the quintessential “Velcro” dog. However, because they are affectionate and tiny and adorable, people have a tendency to baby this breed and treat them as if are helpless. This is a bad idea, as it will cause your Yorkie to become fearful and neurotic. Keep in mind that these dogs were initially bred to hunt rats and are just as capable as a bigger dog.  On the flip side of that, because of their fearlessness, it’s always a good idea to make sure that your Yorkie is leashed and supervised around other dogs, as they will have no problem starting trouble with a dog that is big enough to swallow them.

You also want to remember that they were bred as prey animals and should never be left unsupervised around things like hamsters or guinea pigs. They are also apt to take off in hot pursuit if they spot a squirrel so, again, keep them leashed. Despite their love of adventure, the Yorkie is, at heart, a super sweet, lovable dog who will adore his people above all else and will need plenty of lap-time and snuggles. So, if you are looking for a small, devoted, beautiful dog with a great big personality, stop by today and fall in love with our Yorkie!

Intelligence:  4

Ease of Training: 3

Suitable for: Frenchies are adorable in their own perfect, unique way. Small and compact, these lively little dogs make wonderful companions and are never as happy as when they are being lavished with love. These pups enjoy playing all kinds of games and love “educational” doggie toys, but also adore a nice nap and generally maintain a very relaxed attitude. Training will be easiest if you incorporate short, upbeat training sessions that feel like a game. Frenchies like being around other pets but can grow up to be testy with adult dogs, so—like any breed—it is important to incorporate lots of early socialization with people, places and other animals. This pup is a small enough dog to go most places with you, so socializing them well is a lot of fun! The Frenchie needs to be kept in a cool, comfortable environment and not allowed to overheat. While normally two fifteen-minute walks a day are perfect for keeping him in shape, at the height of the summer, it’s best to keep walks a bit shorter than normaland either take them in early morning or later evening, when the sun is not at its hottest. The Frenchie is an inquisitive, mischievous little dog who will keep you laughing at his antics when he’s not happily snoring at your side. Perfect for families, novice owners and everyone else, this little bulldog is always an excellent choice!

Ease of Training: 5

Suitable for:  This highly active, incredibly intelligent dog does best with an experienced owner—preferably one with a herd of sheep. Haha. While you don’t actually need a herd of sheep, you do need a “job” for your Australian Shepherd. A couple daily walks will not cut it with this breed, he needs a ton of both mental and physical stimulation. His “job” can be as simple as daily training sessions that will keep his mind engaged, along with lots of fetch, frisbee, etc…. The Aussie will do great inall levels of obedience sports--be it agility, flyball, or herding.  He also makes an excellent guide dog, search and rescue dog or police dog. However, if he is left to boredom, he will become destructive and create “jobs” for himself that you are sure to dislike.

Aussies are great with elementary school aged children, and make awesomedogs for families who are into things like hiking/running/sports and are looking to include their dog in most of their activities. They are naturally wary of strangers, and will need to be well-socialized to a variety of people, places and other animals throughout their lives. Obedience training classes are awesome for Aussie puppies as it keeps them engaged and helps with their socialization skills at the same time. Although they are a lot of work, the Aussie makes up for it with their extremely affectionate, devoted and naturally comedic nature. It’s amazing just to watch them and see their gears always turning—this is a breed that will keep you laughing at their antics!! But don’t get the wrong idea. The Aussie is not just funny and lovable, he is an exceedingly loyal dog who will not hesitate to protect his family with his life. If you are looking for an energetic partner in crime who is smart enough to keep up with anything you can throw at him, come meet our Australian Shepherd and see if you don’t fall in love!

PEMBROKE WELSH
CORGI

Weight:  20-30

Energy level: 4

Exercise Needs: 4

Lifespan: 12-14

Does well in an Apartment: 4

Shedding: 5

Intelligence: 5

Kid Friendly: 4

Dog Friendly: 3

Tolerates being alone: 2.5

Ease of Training: 5

Suitable for: Despite the internet depicting them as couch potatoes, this comical little dog is full of energy and always up for an adventure. Friendly and good with kids, the Corgi makes a nice family dog. However, due to his background as a herding breed, be aware that your Corgi may nip at the heels of small children and toddlers to “herd” them. It is nearly impossible to train this innate tendency out of them, so the Corgi is definitely more suited for a family with elementary-school aged kids. This is also a little dog that loves to talk, so be prepared for some barking.

The Corgi is an intelligent breed that is generally easy to train, although they can definitely have a stubborn streak. Just because they can understand what you want, doesn’t mean they will listen. Obedience classes are a great idea, as is the use of food as a reward for good behavior, since this breed is very food-motivated. Keep in mind that, due to their love of a good snack, the Corgi can easily become overweight, so make sure they get lots of exercise. The Corgi is a smart little dog who will also need plenty of mental stimulation, in the form of lots of toys, bones and socialization. This is the perfect dog for an active family that loves to take long walks/go hiking etc. and has experience with dogs. If you are looking for a confident, independent, cheerful little dog that can always make you laugh, the Corgi may be the perfect breed for you.

Intelligence: 4

Kid Friendly: 4

Dog Friendly: 5

Tolerates being alone: 1

Ease of Training: 4

Suitable for: This adorable fluffball is a cheerful comedian who will keep you laughing and make the perfect buddy for you to hang out with. Sociable and playful, the Cockapoo loves everyone, including kids and other pets. That being said, they are rambunctious and can sometimes overwhelm small children. Because of that, they are recommended for kids ages five and up. However, this is just a general recommendation—you know your child best. Please keep in mind, on the flip side of that, that this breed is small enough that your child must be gentle and calm with your Cockapoo, to prevent your pup from becoming injured.

This little dog will barely shed (if at all) and will be easy to maintain as long as they are regularly brushed. Although they have a good amount of energy, the Cockapoo is small enough that one fifteen minute walk a day, some play sessions and a variety of toys will be enough to keep your pup happy. This breed is great for first-time dog owners, as their intelligence and desire to please make them easy to train. If you are looking for an adorable puppy who will look like a stuffed animal their whole life, and love you with their whole heart, the Cockapoo is perfect for you!

Lifespan: 12-14

Does well in an Apartment: 3

Shedding: hypoallergenic and no to low shedding

Intelligence: 4.5

Kid Friendly: 3 (does great with older kids, but not little ones)

Dog Friendly: 3

Tolerates being alone: 3

Ease of Training: 5

Suitable for: The Mini Schnauzer is all big, huge personality and loving heart stuffed into a little dog. Affectionate, cheerful, playful and loving, this pup wants nothing more than to have fun with their favorite people. They’re good with kids and other dogs, although they should be supervised around large breeds as they have a lot of swagger that can get them into trouble.  However, they should also always be watched carefully around smaller mammals, as their ratter instincts may be triggered.  The Mini-Schnauzer is easily trained, but can be stubborn if they don’t know you are the boss. Because of this, obedience classes are an excellent idea. They are also 100% watchdog and will bark to protect you from any danger they perceive, whether it comes in the form of an Amazon delivery or a falling branch. You are welcome.

Your Mini Schnauzer will need a good amount of playtime and walks, along with plenty of socialization to new people, places and things. They are very intelligent and will become bored if their days are repetitive, so new toys and tricks to learn are always going to be a great idea. They will do great with an active family that has school-aged children or anyone who has an active lifestyle. If you are looking for a dog who is supremely affectionate, incredibly clever and laughably mischievous, look no further than the always-amazing Mini Schnauzer.

Lifespan: 12-15 years

Does well in an apartment: 5

Shedding: hypoallergenic/low shedding

Intelligence: 4

Kid Friendly: 5

Dog Friendly: 4

Tolerates being alone: 1

Ease of Training: 4

Suitable For: These precious little dogs are great for first time dog-owners, families, or seniors. So—pretty much everyone. Lovable, huggable and small enough to be portable, the Teddy Bear is eminently adaptable. Their cheerful personalities and gentle ways also make them an excellent choice as a therapy dog or emotional support dog. This baby will need regular brushing and trips to the groomer, but is adorable whether you keep his fur short or long. The Teddy Bear is a people dog through and through and cannot be left alone for long periods of time without becoming depressed and developing separation anxiety. The good news is, your Teddy is small enough to go almost everywhere with you!

Keep in mind that, despite their small size, these little pups have a good amount of energy. A twenty minute walk a day and some good play sessions, along with lots of toys and bones will keep your doggie happy. Teddy Bear’s love children and other animals but, like any small dog, must be closely supervised around young children or large breed dogs, in order to prevent your puppy from being injured. Because they are so small, they are not recommended for families with babies/toddlers. Also keep in mind that, despite this breed’s natural tendency to be outgoing/loving, all puppies should be socialized to a variety of people, places and other animals. I feel obligated to add a reminder to please resist the temptation to spoil/baby your Teddy (they’re so cute that it is easy to let them become brats haha)  Don’t carry your pup everywhere. Don’t let them get away with playing too rough because they’re “so cute and little.” Treat your Teddy like you would any other dog, and he will grow up to be happy and well-adjusted. Hypoallergenic? Yup! Loves everyone? Yup! Always cheerful? Yup! Small enough to be a constant companion? Yup! Well? What are you waiting for? Come meet your Teddy Bear and fall in love!
