MINI SCHNAUZER

Weight: 11-20

Energy level: 5

Exercise Needs: 5

Lifespan: 12-14

Does well in an Apartment: 3

Shedding: hypoallergenic and no to low shedding

Intelligence: 4.5

Kid Friendly: 3 (does great with older kids, but not little ones)

Dog Friendly: 3

Tolerates being alone: 3

Ease of Training: 5

Suitable for: The Mini Schnauzer is all big, huge personality and loving heart stuffed into a little dog. Affectionate, cheerful, playful and loving, this pup wants nothing more than to have fun with their favorite people. They’re good with kids and other dogs, although they should be supervised around large breeds as they have a lot of swagger that can get them into trouble.  However, they should also always be watched carefully around smaller mammals, as their ratter instincts may be triggered.  The Mini-Schnauzer is easily trained, but can be stubborn if they don’t know you are the boss. Because of this, obedience classes are an excellent idea. They are also 100% watchdog and will bark to protect you from any danger they perceive, whether it comes in the form of an Amazon delivery or a falling branch. You are welcome.

Your Mini Schnauzer will need a good amount of playtime and walks, along with plenty of socialization to new people, places and things. They are very intelligent and will become bored if their days are repetitive, so new toys and tricks to learn are always going to be a great idea. They will do great with an active family that has school-aged children or anyone who has an active lifestyle. If you are looking for a dog who is supremely affectionate, incredibly clever and laughably mischievous, look no further than the always-amazing Mini Schnauzer.

PEMBROKE WELSH
CORGI

Weight:  20-30

Energy level: 4

Exercise Needs: 4

Lifespan: 12-14

Does well in an Apartment: 4

Shedding: 5

Intelligence: 5

Kid Friendly: 4

Dog Friendly: 3

Tolerates being alone: 2.5

Ease of Training: 5

Suitable for: Despite the internet depicting them as couch potatoes, this comical little dog is full of energy and always up for an adventure. Friendly and good with kids, the Corgi makes a nice family dog. However, due to his background as a herding breed, be aware that your Corgi may nip at the heels of small children and toddlers to “herd” them. It is nearly impossible to train this innate tendency out of them, so the Corgi is definitely more suited for a family with elementary-school aged kids. This is also a little dog that loves to talk, so be prepared for some barking.

The Corgi is an intelligent breed that is generally easy to train, although they can definitely have a stubborn streak. Just because they can understand what you want, doesn’t mean they will listen. Obedience classes are a great idea, as is the use of food as a reward for good behavior, since this breed is very food-motivated. Keep in mind that, due to their love of a good snack, the Corgi can easily become overweight, so make sure they get lots of exercise. The Corgi is a smart little dog who will also need plenty of mental stimulation, in the form of lots of toys, bones and socialization. This is the perfect dog for an active family that loves to take long walks/go hiking etc. and has experience with dogs. If you are looking for a confident, independent, cheerful little dog that can always make you laugh, the Corgi may be the perfect breed for you.

Dog Friendly: 2

Tolerates being alone: 1

Ease of Training: 4

Suitable for: These intelligent little dogs are great for families with older children, seniors who are retired and anyone looking for a pint-sized therapy dog or just an always-cheerful best friend. The Pom is easy to train, as long as they know that you are in charge—if not, they will be glad to step up and declare themselves ruler of all they see. It’s always a good idea to take your pup to obedience training--you will be surprised to see how much they enjoy learning new tricks. Your Pom will also make an excellent watch dog, once they’ve been trained to stop barking on command.  These little dogs are truly lovable and are happiest when surrounded by all their people. They will normally pick one family member as “theirs” but they will play with everyone. If you are looking for a pocket-sized dog who is smart, independent and fiercely devoted to you, the Pom is the perfect pupper!

PEEK-A-POO

Lifespan: 12-15

Does well in an Apartment: 5

Shedding: little to no shedding

Intelligence: 4

Kid Friendly: 4

Dog Friendly: 4

Tolerates being alone: 2

Ease of Training: 3

Suitable for: The Peek-A-Poo is an affectionate, happy little dog who wants nothing more than to be a valued member of your family. They do great with school-aged children (generally six and up depending on the child) as long as the children have been taught how to be gentle and respectful of dogs and as long as they are raised together. The Peek-A-Poo is, by nature, wary of strangers—both people and animals alike. Because of this, it is imperative that they are well socialized to a variety of people, places and other animals throughout their puppyhood. These are active little dogs who love to play outdoors. They have a good amount of energy and will need at least one good walk and a couple nice play sessions every day. Just be careful they don’t run around too much, as they can overheat easily. During the summer, an air-conditioned house is a must for this breed. The Peek-A-Poo is a natural born watchdog and will alert you to anything they find suspicious, so if you are looking for a quiet breed, perhaps the Peek-A-Poo isn’t your ideal match. However, if you are interested in an adorable, smart, cheerful little pup who will, no doubt, become the beating heart of your family, look no further than the wonderful Peek-A-Poo

PUG

Lifespan: 12-15

Does well in an apartment: 5

Shedding: 5

Intelligence: 4

Kid Friendly: 4

Dog Friendly: 4

Tolerates being alone: 1

Ease of Training: 3

Suitable for: There is no way to look at the comical face of a little Pug and not smile. These compact, wrinkly little smushballs expect to be the center of your world and will be visibly heartbroken if you don’t give them all the love and attention they desire.  Although these pups are quite intelligent, they do have a stubborn streak that can make them a bit challenging to train. Crate training, lots of potty trips and a ton of positive reinforcement is the way to go with this breed. Keep in mind that Pugs may be willful, but they make up for that with an abundance of cheer and a lot of personality.

These are easygoing little dogs who are good for novice owners and families alike. As always, if you have small children, they should be taught how to act respectfully around dogs, and never be around the puppy without supervision. Like any pup, the Pug should be well socialized to a variety of people, places and other animals. Also, keep in mind that, because they have flatter faces, Pugs do not do well in extremely hot or cold. These are strictly indoor pups who will need about a brisk 20 minute walk per day to stay happy and healthy. If you are ready for a comical little charmer who is happy-go-lucky, generally quiet and makes a great snuggle partner, look no further than the inimitable Pug!

Ease of Training: 3.5

Suitable for: These precious little dogs are great for first time dog-owners, families, or seniors. So—pretty much everyone. Lovable, huggable and small enough to be portable, the Teddy Bear is eminently adaptable. Their cheerful personalities and gentle ways also make them an excellent choice as a therapy dog or emotional support dog. This baby will need regular brushing and trips to the groomer, but is adorable whether you keep his fur short or long. The Teddy Bear is a people dog through and through and cannot be left alone for long periods of time without becoming depressed and developing separation anxiety. The good news is, your Teddy is small enough to go almost everywhere with you! Keep in mind that, despite their small size, these little pups have a good amount of energy. A twenty minute walk a day and some good play sessions, along with lots of toys and bones will keep your doggie happy and well-adjusted. Teddy Bears love children and other animals but, like any small dog, must be closely supervised around young children or large breed dogs, in order to prevent your puppy from being injured. Hypoallergenic? Yup! Loves everyone? Yup! Always cheerful? Yup! Small enough to be a constant companion? Yup! Well? What are you waiting for? Come meet your Teddy Bear and fall in love!

MINI DACHSHUND

Weight: 8-11

Energy level: 3

Exercise Needs: 2.5

Lifespan: 12-15

Does well in an apartment: 5

Shedding: Non-Shedding/Hypoallergenic

Intelligence: 4

Kid Friendly: 4

Dog Friendly: 3

Tolerates being alone: 2.5

Ease of Training: 3

Suitable for: The breed standard for the Dachshund states that this breed is “clever, lively and courageous to the point of rashness.” That is an excellent description. Despite their small size and adorable appearance, Dachshunds were originally bred as hunting dogs and their size/build enabled them to dig and maneuver through tunnels, hunting badgers. Over the years, Dachshunds have ended up primarily being family dogs, but they have not lost their instinct to dig and chase, nor have they lost the idea that they are the ones in charge. It’s this combination of playfulness, intelligence and comical stubbornness that endears the breed to people of all ages and lifestyles.  Dachshunds make good family dogs as they are extremely lovable, but keep in mind that they are likely to bond the most strongly with one person. They love their snacks and are prone to being overweight, so you must be able to resist the appeal in those soulful eyes, as they do their best to convince you they’ve never been fed before. If you are looking for an adorable, intelligent pup with an independent streak and a playful spirit, the Dachshund might be the one for you!

FRENCH BULLDOG

Does well in an Apartment:  3

Shedding:  hypoallergenic

Intelligence:  4

Kid Friendly:  3

Dog Friendly:  3

Tolerates being alone:  2

Ease of Training: 3

Suitable for: Frenchies are adorable in their own perfect, unique way. Small and compact, these lively little dogs make wonderful companions and are never as happy as when they are being lavished with love. These pups enjoy playing all kinds of games and love “educational” doggie toys, but also adore a nice nap and generally maintain a very relaxed attitude. Training will be easiest if you incorporate short, upbeat training sessions that feel like a game. Frenchies like being around other pets but can grow up to be testy with adult dogs, so—like any breed—it is important to incorporate lots of early socialization with people, places and other animals. This pup is a small enough dog to go most places with you, so socializing them well is a lot of fun! The Frenchie needs to be kept in a cool, comfortable environment and not allowed to overheat. While normally two fifteen-minute walks a day are perfect for keeping him in shape, at the height of the summer, it’s best to keep walks a bit shorter than normaland either take them in early morning or later evening, when the sun is not at its hottest. The Frenchie is an inquisitive, mischievous little dog who will keep you laughing at his antics when he’s not happily snoring at your side. Perfect for families, novice owners and everyone else, this little bulldog is always an excellent choice!

GERMAN SHEPHERD

Weight:  75-90

Energy level: 5

Exercise Needs: 5

Lifespan: 10-14

Does well in an Apartment: 1

Shedding: 5

Intelligence: 5

Kid Friendly: 5

Dog Friendly: 2 (unless raised together—does better with the opposite sex)

Tolerates being alone: 1

Ease of Training: 5

Suitable for: The German Shepherd has been one of the most popular dogs in the US for many years. Highly intelligent, easy to train, agile and devoted, these dogs have been used for everything from Search and Rescue, to police dogs, to seeing eye dogs. This is a breed that needs to spend most of their time with their owner, and must be kept busy with lots of exercise, training and, if possible, a job. They are naturally wary of strangers, so they make great guard dogs. However, if you would like your dog to be more friendly, they are adaptable to most situations and will do well if they are given a lot of socialization with a variety of people, places and other animals. Obedience training is a great idea for this breed.

These dogs are great with kids, as long as they are introduced in puppyhood and treated with respect—meaning your child must be gentle with the dog, and respect his space when he is trying to relax or eat his meals. A German Shepherd can work for a first-time dog owner, as long as the owner is committed to going to obedience classes and making sure the dog’s mental and physical needs are being met. This is not a dog that can be left alone for any real length of time, as they are prone to separation anxiety and will become bored, depressed and destructive. If you are looking for a great family dog, or a wonderful companion who is fiercely devoted to you and can be taught to do almost any job or trick you can dream up, the German Shepherd is the breed for you.

If you’re searching for a pint size companion that combines elegance and spunk, meet the beautiful Silkese! With their silky coats, affectionate nature and lively spirits, Silkies are perfect for city apartments, cozy homes or anyone craving a loyal lapdog with just a touch of mischief. Silkies thrive of cuddles and love being the center of attention. They also love to play and are curious by nature, so will happily chase toys or go with you to explore new sights and have grand adventures. SIlkies are good little watchdogs, who are quick to alert you to any visitors. They are not as “yappy” as some other breeds, but do also enjoy using their voice, so keep this in mind if you live in an apartment. These little pups form deep bonds with their families and will do well with seniors, singles or families with gentle children. Given their small size, they are generally recommended for children six and up. Silkese pups are definitely intelligent but may inherit a touch of the Silky Terrier’s stubbornness. Short training sessions with lots of positive reinforcement will work best with these pups. Silkese pups are ideal for someone who is looking for a small dog with a big personality—preferably someone who works from home or has a very flexible schedule, as this small pup hates being left alone. So, if you are looking for a devoted, adaptable, pocket puppy with a heart full of love, the Silkese might be your perfect match.

Intelligence: 4

Kid Friendly: 4 (but not recommended for families with toddlers/preschoolers)

Dog Friendly: 4

Tolerates being alone: 1

Ease of Training: 5

Suitable for: Cocker Spaniel’s make excellent family dogs as they are up for pretty much whatever you want to do—whether it’s snuggling beside you on the couch and watching Netflix, or romping in the backyard with the kids, the Spaniel’s main motivation is to please you. However, you must bear in mind that the Cocker is a sensitive little dog and small children pulling his ears or hurting him will be met with fear and possible behavioral issues. Because of this, the Cocker is recommended for families with elementary-school aged children.

As sweet and gentle as this pup is, remember that they were originally bred to be hunting dogs, and thus may chase small birds or animals, so keep your pup leashed at all times. Cocker Spaniel’s are impressionable little dogs and must be trained accordingly. Any kind of harsh training method will frighten your Cocker and traumatize them. Lots of praise and a gentle voice are the way to go with this breed. Part of the Cocker Spaniel’s appeal is their luxurious fur and long ears—keep in mind that these will need to be appropriately cared for. They should be brushed every day, groomed regularly and their ears must be kept dry. If the idea of an incredibly sweet, sensitive puppy who is beautiful both inside and out appeals to you, come meet our Cocker today!

MINI SHEEPADOODLE

Weight:  25-30

Lifespan: 12-15

Does well in an Apartment: 5

Shedding: hypoallergenic/light shedding

Intelligence: 5

Kid Friendly: 5

Dog Friendly:5

Tolerates being alone: 1

Ease of Training: 3

Suitable For: Sheepadoodles mix the best of both worlds: a Sheepdog’s gentle protectiveness and a Poodle’s intelligence and playful energy. These big, fluffy pups adore being around their families, as they’re loyal, affectionate, and thrive on attention. As they are intensely attached to their people, if left alone too often or for long lengths of time, they will likely develop separation anxiety and other bad habits. This is definitely a breed that needs to be a vital member of your family! While they’ll happily adapt to apartments or houses, these pups need daily walks or playtime to burn off their energy. Due to their intelligence, they also need a good bit of mental stimulation, so things like puzzle toys, snuffle mats and speech buttons are all great ideas for this breed.

Sheepadoodles are quick learners (thanks to their Poodle genes) and pick up tricks easily, but they can also be a bit stubborn when their Sheepdog side kicks in. Short training sessions with a lot of positive reinforcement are the way to go. These pups are great with kids and other pets, but—like any breed—they do best with early socialization to people, places and other animals. They are good for novice owners, provided their new person understands that they may sometimes dig in their heels. Obedience training is a great idea for both the first time owner and their puppy! These pups look like adorable stuffed-animals, but keep in mind that their fur will need daily brushing, in order to keep in from becoming tangled, and they will need to be groomed approximately every six weeks. With their comical antics and abundant, endless love for their humans, the Sheepadoodle is perfect for families who want a loyal, lovable buddy who has an active sense of humor!

Ease of Training: 3

Suitable for: This beautiful dog has boundless energy and is best suited to people/families with a very active lifestyle. The Husky is deeply attached to their people and will thrive when allowed to participate in the daily ins-and-outs of family life. This is not a breed that can be left alone for long, as they are so family-oriented that they will become anxious and destructive if left too often. They also must get lots of exercise, at the very least two thirty minute walks a day, along with lots of play sessions! They enjoy training sessions and anything that challenges them and keeps them busy. If not given sufficient amounts of exercise to burn off their energy, the Husky will become destructive and may act out in destructive ways. Huskies are playful, loving, affectionate, intelligent pups who will keep you laughing at their comical vocalizations and charming antics. So, if you have an active lifestyle and are looking for your soul dog, look no further than the beautiful Husky.

Intelligence: 4

Kid Friendly: 3.5

Dog Friendly: 4

Tolerates being alone: 1

Ease of Training: 4

Suitable for: The Maltese is a beautiful little ball of silky fur who adores being the center of attention. Extremely people oriented, a Maltese will flourish when given lots of love and attention and makes an excellent therapy dog. Generally fearless, your Maltese will consider everyone they meet a friend. However, their small, delicate bone structure makes them a poor choice for families with toddlers or young children. Also, do not make the mistake of babying your Maltese too much, as he may then become snippy with anyone outside his beloved family. Just treat him like you would any other dog and make sure you socialize him to a variety of people, places and other animals during puppyhood so he grows up happy and well adjusted!

This breed’s luxuriant white fur can be allowed to grow all the way to the floor as long as you are committed to grooming him daily to keep him from matting. If not, this adorable pup is just as cute with shorter fur. It’s up to you to choose any look you like! If you keep his fur shorter, he will need to be groomed every six to eight weeks.  This little dog is a housedog who does not tolerate extreme heat or cold and often does well being trained to a potty pad in order to stay inside in the wintertime. The Maltese will remain playful and puppylike throughout his life. His fiercely devoted nature and cheerful intelligence makes this breed the perfect dog for just about anyone. If that sounds great to you, come meet our little guy today!

As they are small enough to be easily injured, they do better in a house with elementary-school aged kids.

They also should be well socialized during their puppyhood to a variety of people, places and other animals—luckily this is easy, as they are small enough to bring most places with you! They are cheerful little pups who will get along well with other family pets. As they are hypoallergenic, they do not shed, but will need to be groomed every six-eight weeks and brushed daily.
