BOSTON TERRIER

Weight: 10-25

Energy level: 4

Exercise Needs: 3

Lifespan: 13-15

Does well in an apartment: 5

Shedding: 2

Intelligence: 4

Kid Friendly: 5

Dog Friendly: 5

Tolerates being alone: 2.5

Ease of Training: 3.5

Suitable for: Boston Terriers make great dogs for anyone, including families with young children, as they are small enough to easily interact with children, but sturdy enough to not get hurt. (Keep in mind that you should always keep a close eye on your puppy to ensure any children are being gentle) Due to their short snout, the Boston should never be allowed to get overheated. On the other hand, their short coat means they also do not do well in the cold. In a nutshell, the Boston is a housedog and should not be left outside for long periods of time.

These little dogs are playful and scrappy, so make sure to have plenty of toys and bones in your house. This breed does great with other dogs, but the males can sometimes get temperamental around other males, so make sure your Boston is exposed to a large variety of people, places and animals throughout their puppyhood to ensure they grow up cheerful and well-adjusted. While highly intelligent, this is not a breed that responds well to any negative/aggressive/”alpha” training methods. Keep the training sessions short and use lots of positive reinforcement, and your Boston will do great! If you can’t resist the large, soulful eyes of a Boston Terrier gazing up at you adoringly…stop trying. Come take your new Boston home today—we promise you won’t regret it.

Intelligence: 5

Kid Friendly: 5

Dog Friendly: 5

Tolerates being alone: 1

Ease of Training: 5

Suitable for:  The Mini Aussie is a small to mid-sized dog with a lot of energy who will need daily walks and a good amount of mental stimulation to grow into a happy, well-adjusted dog. Plan on an hour or two a day devoted to walks and play sessions with your puppy.  This breed is highly intelligent and genuinely enjoys learning new things. They will do exceptionally well in obedience classes or in agility training.  Like any puppy, the Mini-Aussie should be socialized to new people, places and things at a young age. They love children and other pets and will thrive when they are allowed to be important members of the family, who are left alone as infrequently as possible. As the Mini Aussie can be quite small during puppyhood, they are generally recommended for someone with elementary-school aged children. However, as long as your toddler/preschooler is well-supervised and gentle with the puppy, the Mini Aussie does eventually get large enough to be a bit sturdier, so it all works out. Cheerful, extremely devoted, eager to please and highly lovable, the Miniature Australian Shepherd is an excellent dog for an active owner or family.

MORKIE

MALTESE/YORKSHIRE TERRIER

Weight:  6-10

Energy level: 4

Exercise Needs: 4

Lifespan: 12-14

Does well in an Apartment: 3

Shedding: hypoallergenic/non-shedding

Intelligence: 4

Kid Friendly: 3 (but not recommended for families with toddlers/preschoolers)

Dog Friendly: 3

Tolerates being alone: 2

Ease of Training: 3.5

Suitable For: The Morkie is a small dog with tons of personality and sass. This lovable little scamp has a lot of energy and loves to play, but can be a bit on the stubborn side when it comes to training. Plenty of praise and rewards combined with short training sessions is the way to go with this breed. Morkies do well with other pets, as long as they are raised around them from puppyhood. Socialization to a variety of people, places and other animals is imperative with this breed.

Morkies are affectionate and highly loyal to their people. As they are a small breed who demands quite a bit of attention, they will do best with adults, or in a family that has older children. Although they will love everyone in their household, they will almost always claim one family member as “their” special person. The Morkie is also a great watchdog who will alert you to any suspicious activity, from falling branches to Amazon deliveries. Although you will not be able to fully train their barking tendencies out of them, if you are persistent and patient, you will be able to teach your Morkie to stop barking on command. Because Morkies can be a little on the stubborn side, they are best suited to an experienced dog owner. However, they can make a great dog for a novice owner who is willing to put in the time and effort to train them. We promise your efforts will be rewarded tenfold by this incredibly lovable and intensely devoted dog. If you are looking for to have a small, Velcro pup who loves playing and snuggling with equal fervor, stop by and meet our beautiful Morkie today!

Ease of Training: 4

Suitable for: This adorable fluffball is a cheerful comedian who will keep you laughing and make the perfect buddy for you to hang out with. Sociable and playful, the Cockapoo loves everyone, including kids and other pets. That being said, they are rambunctious and can sometimes overwhelm small children. Because of that, they are recommended for kids ages five and up. However, this is just a general recommendation—you know your child best. Please keep in mind, on the flip side of that, that this breed is small enough that your child must be gentle and calm with your Cockapoo, to prevent your pup from becoming injured.

This little dog will barely shed (if at all) and will be easy to maintain as long as they are regularly brushed. Although they have a good amount of energy, the Cockapoo is small enough that one fifteen minute walk a day, some play sessions and a variety of toys will be enough to keep your pup happy. This breed is great for first-time dog owners, as their intelligence and desire to please make them easy to train. If you are looking for an adorable puppy who will look like a stuffed animal their whole life, and love you with their whole heart, the Cockapoo is perfect for you!

Ease of Training: 5

Suitable for: With their little black button eyes against a floofy white fur, the Bichon Frise looks like a small stuffed animal. These little dogs are affectionate, gentle and unfailingly happy—except for when left alone. This is a little pup that needs to be with their family. They are known for developing separation anxiety and behavioral issues when left alone for long periods of time, but thrive when they are allowed to spend most of their time with their people. They are sweet little dogs, and any kind of harsh reprimands will break their hearts, so be sure to rely on all positive reinforcement for your training sessions.

These little dogs love to play and have lots of energy so they do great in obedience, agility and rally competitions. If that is not your thing, keep in mind that this pup is small enough that one or two good walks a day and plenty of toys (especially educational ones) will ensure they stay happy. They are also excellent therapy dogs who will bring a smile to everyone’s face. Bichon’s make good family dogs, but—like any small breed—must be watched closely with young children and larger breed dogs to ensure they don’t get injured. These little dogs are highly intelligent, cheerful and abundantly loving—if this sounds like a puppy who would steal your heart, stop by to meet our Bichon today!

They're smart and eager to please, which makes them pretty easy to train and up for learning new tricks. However, they are quite intelligent and if you baby them too much, (for instance, giving them snacks every time they look at you with those adorable puppy eyes) they will quickly learn how to train you into doing what they want. Haha. While their long, silky coat needs regular grooming, you can always trim it to keep things low-maintenance. These dogs are super adaptable, doing well in apartments or smaller spaces, and they fit right in whether you're active or more laid-back. Shedding: hypoallergenic and no to low shedding

Intelligence: 4.5

Kid Friendly: 3 (does great with older kids, but not little ones)

Dog Friendly: 3

Tolerates being alone: 3

Ease of Training: 5

Suitable for: The Mini Schnauzer is all big, huge personality and loving heart stuffed into a little dog. Affectionate, cheerful, playful and loving, this pup wants nothing more than to have fun with their favorite people. They’re good with kids and other dogs, although they should be supervised around large breeds as they have a lot of swagger that can get them into trouble.  However, they should also always be watched carefully around smaller mammals, as their ratter instincts may be triggered.  The Mini-Schnauzer is easily trained, but can be stubborn if they don’t know you are the boss. Because of this, obedience classes are an excellent idea. They are also 100% watchdog and will bark to protect you from any danger they perceive, whether it comes in the form of an Amazon delivery or a falling branch. You are welcome.

Your Mini Schnauzer will need a good amount of playtime and walks, along with plenty of socialization to new people, places and things. They are very intelligent and will become bored if their days are repetitive, so new toys and tricks to learn are always going to be a great idea. They will do great with an active family that has school-aged children or anyone who has an active lifestyle. If you are looking for a dog who is supremely affectionate, incredibly clever and laughably mischievous, look no further than the always-amazing Mini Schnauzer.

However, instead of hunting, nowadays their energy is usually channeled into agility and obedience competitions. The Westie can also make a great therapy dog. Above all that, the Westie makes a wonderful companion, as they absolutely adore people and get along great virtually everyone, including kids and other pets. Using short, enjoyable training sessions that include lots of praise and treats, your Westie can absolutely be trained to alert you with just one short bark. Ease of Training: 2

Suitable for: This plucky, independent breed is highly intelligent, loving and loyal. Despite being devoted to their owners and incredibly smart, they can be impatient with toddlers/preschoolers and, as such, are better suited to families with elementary school aged children. Although they are on the smaller side, Shibas are extremely active and need a lot of exercise. They were also bred to be hunting dogs and would do great with an outdoorsy type of owner who is into hunting/hiking/camping etc.Given their love of adventure, this is a dog that can never be allowed off leash, as they will take off to have fun and not realize they may be unable to find their way back to you. In fact, a microchip and a trackable collar are an excellent idea for your Shiba. These pups have often been referred to as “cat-dogs” because of their freethinking nature and tendency to do things their own way. Another catlike tendency of the Shiba is that they are naturally clean and known to be one of the easiest dogs to housebreak! This little dog’s spirited intelligence and comical ways charms everyone who own one—it is said that a Shiba is not just a dog, it’s a way of life. Best suited for an experienced owner/family who has a fenced in yard, an active lifestyle and wants a dog that is happy to hang out--but also happy to do his own thing!

Suitable for: Cocker Spaniel’s make excellent family dogs as they are up for pretty much whatever you want to do—whether it’s snuggling beside you on the couch and watching Netflix, or romping in the backyard with the kids, the Spaniel’s main motivation is to please you. However, you must bear in mind that the Cocker is a sensitive little dog and small children pulling his ears or hurting him will be met with fear and possible behavioral issues. Because of this, the Cocker is recommended for families with elementary-school aged children.

As sweet and gentle as this pup is, remember that they were originally bred to be hunting dogs, and thus may chase small birds or animals, so keep your pup leashed at all times. Cocker Spaniel’s are impressionable little dogs and must be trained accordingly. Any kind of harsh training method will frighten your Cocker and traumatize them. Lots of praise and a gentle voice are the way to go with this breed. Part of the Cocker Spaniel’s appeal is their luxurious fur and long ears—keep in mind that these will need to be appropriately cared for. They should be brushed every day, groomed regularly and their ears must be kept dry. If the idea of an incredibly sweet, sensitive puppy who is beautiful both inside and out appeals to you, come meet our Cocker today!

Lifespan: 10-14

Does well in an Apartment: 2

Shedding: 5

Intelligence: 5

Kid Friendly: 5

Dog Friendly: 2

Tolerates being alone: 1

Ease of Training: 5

Suitable for: The German Shepherd has been one of the most popular dogs in the US for many years. Highly intelligent, easy to train, agile and devoted, these dogs have been used for everything from Search and Rescue, to police dogs, to seeing eye dogs. This is a breed that needs to spend most of their time with their owner, and must be kept busy with lots of exercise, training and, if possible, a job. They are naturally wary of strangers, so they make great guard dogs. However, if you would like your dog to be more friendly, they are adaptable to most situations and will do well if they are given a lot of socialization with a variety of people, places and other animals. Obedience training is a great idea for this breed.

These dogs are great with kids, as long as they are introduced in puppyhood and treated with respect—meaning your child must be gentle with the dog, and respect his space when he is trying to relax or eat his meals. A German Shepherd can work for a first-time dog owner, as long as the owner is committed to going to obedience classes and making sure the dog’s mental and physical needs are being met. This is not a dog that can be left alone for any real length of time, as they are prone to separation anxiety and will become bored, depressed and destructive. If you are looking for a great family dog, or a wonderful companion who is fiercely devoted to you and can be taught to do almost any job or trick you can dream up, the German Shepherd is the breed for you.

TEDDY BEAR

BICHON/SHIH TZU

Weight: 6-12

Energy level: 4

Exercise Needs: 3

Lifespan: 12-15 years

Does well in an apartment: 5

Shedding: hypoallergenic/low shedding

Intelligence: 4

Kid Friendly: 5

Dog Friendly: 4

Tolerates being alone: 1

Ease of Training: 4

Suitable For: These precious little dogs are great for first time dog-owners, families, or seniors. So—pretty much everyone. Lovable, huggable and small enough to be portable, the Teddy Bear is eminently adaptable. Their cheerful personalities and gentle ways also make them an excellent choice as a therapy dog or emotional support dog. This baby will need regular brushing and trips to the groomer, but is adorable whether you keep his fur short or long. The Teddy Bear is a people dog through and through and cannot be left alone for long periods of time without becoming depressed and developing separation anxiety. The good news is, your Teddy is small enough to go almost everywhere with you!

Keep in mind that, despite their small size, these little pups have a good amount of energy. A twenty minute walk a day and some good play sessions, along with lots of toys and bones will keep your doggie happy. Teddy Bear’s love children and other animals but, like any small dog, must be closely supervised around young children or large breed dogs, in order to prevent your puppy from being injured. Because they are so small, they are not recommended for families with babies/toddlers. Also keep in mind that, despite this breed’s natural tendency to be outgoing/loving, all puppies should be socialized to a variety of people, places and other animals. I feel obligated to add a reminder to please resist the temptation to spoil/baby your Teddy (they’re so cute that it is easy to let them become brats haha)  Don’t carry your pup everywhere. Don’t let them get away with playing too rough because they’re “so cute and little.” Treat your Teddy like you would any other dog, and he will grow up to be happy and well-adjusted. Hypoallergenic? Yup! Loves everyone? Yup! Always cheerful? Yup! Small enough to be a constant companion? Yup! Well? What are you waiting for? Come meet your Teddy Bear and fall in love!

Intelligence:  4

Kid Friendly:  3

Dog Friendly:  3

Tolerates being alone:  2

Ease of Training: 3

Suitable for: Frenchies are adorable in their own perfect, unique way. Small and compact, these lively little dogs make wonderful companions and are never as happy as when they are being lavished with love. These pups enjoy playing all kinds of games and love “educational” doggie toys, but also adore a nice nap and generally maintain a very relaxed attitude. Training will be easiest if you incorporate short, upbeat training sessions that feel like a game. Frenchies like being around other pets but can grow up to be testy with adult dogs, so—like any breed—it is important to incorporate lots of early socialization with people, places and other animals. This pup is a small enough dog to go most places with you, so socializing them well is a lot of fun! The Frenchie needs to be kept in a cool, comfortable environment and not allowed to overheat. While normally two fifteen-minute walks a day are perfect for keeping him in shape, at the height of the summer, it’s best to keep walks a bit shorter than normaland either take them in early morning or later evening, when the sun is not at its hottest. The Frenchie is an inquisitive, mischievous little dog who will keep you laughing at his antics when he’s not happily snoring at your side. Perfect for families, novice owners and everyone else, this little bulldog is always an excellent choice!

As they are small enough to be easily injured, they do better in a house with elementary-school aged kids.

They also should be well socialized during their puppyhood to a variety of people, places and other animals—luckily this is easy, as they are small enough to bring most places with you! They are cheerful little pups who will get along well with other family pets. As they are hypoallergenic, they do not shed, but will need to be groomed every six-eight weeks and brushed daily. PEMBROKE WELSH
CORGI

Weight:  20-30

Energy level: 4

Exercise Needs: 4

Lifespan: 12-14

Does well in an Apartment: 4

Shedding: 5

Intelligence: 5

Kid Friendly: 4

Dog Friendly: 3

Tolerates being alone: 2.5

Ease of Training: 5

Suitable for: Despite the internet depicting them as couch potatoes, this comical little dog is full of energy and always up for an adventure. Friendly and good with kids, the Corgi makes a nice family dog. However, due to his background as a herding breed, be aware that your Corgi may nip at the heels of small children and toddlers to “herd” them. It is nearly impossible to train this innate tendency out of them, so the Corgi is definitely more suited for a family with elementary-school aged kids. This is also a little dog that loves to talk, so be prepared for some barking.

The Corgi is an intelligent breed that is generally easy to train, although they can definitely have a stubborn streak. Just because they can understand what you want, doesn’t mean they will listen. Obedience classes are a great idea, as is the use of food as a reward for good behavior, since this breed is very food-motivated. Keep in mind that, due to their love of a good snack, the Corgi can easily become overweight, so make sure they get lots of exercise. The Corgi is a smart little dog who will also need plenty of mental stimulation, in the form of lots of toys, bones and socialization. This is the perfect dog for an active family that loves to take long walks/go hiking etc. and has experience with dogs. If you are looking for a confident, independent, cheerful little dog that can always make you laugh, the Corgi may be the perfect breed for you.
